10 things to do in Rhodes: tips and sights

Rhodes is one of Greece’s most beautiful islands and offers the perfect mix of sun, culture and nature. From beautiful beaches with crystal clear water to medieval city walls. Below are 10 tips and sights you shouldn’t miss during your stay in Rhodes.

1. Medieval town of Rhodes (Old Town)

The old town of Rhodes is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the thick city walls, you will discover narrow streets, charming squares, delightful (souvenir) shops and excellent restaurants. It is the perfect place to stroll around and immerse yourself in its rich history.

Tip: don’t forget to visit the Street of the Knights (Ippoton) and the Palace of the Grand Master.

2. Acropolis of Lindos

Lindos is located approximately 50 km south of Rhodes. This small village is known for its whitewashed houses and narrow alleys. At the top of the hill is the Acropolis, from where you have a fantastic view of the sea. The combination of charming village and historical ruins makes Lindos an absolute must-see.

3. Prasonisi Peninsula

At the southernmost tip of Rhodes, you will find Prasonisi, known for its perfect windsurfing conditions. On one side of the beach lies the Aegean Sea and on the other side the Mediterranean Sea. Even if you don’t surf, it is special to see the interplay of two seas.

Please note: it is often inaccessible in winter because the water level is higher then.

4. Island hopping to Simi

Simi is located close to Rhodes and is ideal for a day trip. The island is quieter than Rhodes itself, and the colourful houses nestled against the hills around the harbour make it feel like you are on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. It is a charming place to walk, take photographs and enjoy yourself.

Tip: boats depart daily from Rhodes Town and the trip takes approximately 1.5 hours.

5. Butterflies Valley

This nature park covers approximately 600 acres and is home to thousands of butterflies in the summer. In the valley, you will also find a museum where you can learn more about the island’s flora and fauna. The most special feature is the breeding ground, where butterflies can reproduce safely. For nature lovers, this is an enchanting place to visit.

Tip: the best time to visit Butterflies Valley is in July and August, when most butterflies are visible. Don’t worry about it being too hot; the shady paths, waterfalls and natural springs make it much cooler than other parts of the island.

6. Kamiros archaeological site

Kamiros, also known as the Pompeii of Greece, was one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes and offers not only a fascinating insight into life in the 5th century BC, but also into life at sea.

Tip: combine your visit to Kamiros with a day at the beach at New Kamiros.

7. Tsambika Beach

One of the most beautiful beaches in Rhodes is Tsambika Beach. This wide sandy beach, surrounded by green mountains and clear water, is perfect for a relaxing day of sun, sea and sand. There are several trendy beach bars and it is also ideal for families, as there are many water sports activities available, such as stand-up paddleboarding and jet skiing.

8. Palace of the Grand Master

In the old town, you will find this impressive palace, which was once the headquarters of the knights. Inside the palace, you will find mosaic floors, marble columns and historic rooms. It offers a wonderful insight into medieval life and the history of Rhodes.

Please note: opening hours may vary, so check in advance when you can visit the palace.

9. Embonas

Embonas, also known as the “wine village of Rhodes”, is a charming mountain village in the countryside, renowned for its wine production, honey, olive oil and traditional cuisine. It is a perfect place for a lunch break or wine tasting. Here you can experience the real Rhodes!

10. Farma of Rhodes Petting Zoo

Are you on holiday with children? Then don’t miss the Farma or Rhodes Petting Zoo. There are lots of farm animals, such as deer, goats, ostriches and llamas, almost all of which you can pet and feed.

Tip: combine this trip with a visit to the Butterfly Valley, which is not far away.
