AFM nummer Griekenland aanvragen

What is an AFM number in Greece and what do I need it for?

In this blog you can read what an AFM number is, what you need it for and how to obtain one.

What is an AFM number?

The AFM number is the Greek tax number. It’s comparable to the BSN (citizen service number) in the Netherlands or a tax number in another country.

When do you need an AFM number?

An AFM number is required if you want to do any of the following:

  • Buying or selling real estate
  • Opening a Greek bank account
  • You want to connect utilities, such as water, electricity or internet
  • You want to file a tax return (this is also necessary if you do not rent out your home)
  • Want to receive rental income
  • Want to start a business in Greece

Conclusion: if you want to do official or financial transactions in Greece, you will need an AFM number.

How do you get an AFM number?

You can apply for an AFM number free of charge from the Greek Tax Authority (DOY – ΔOΥ). You must either report there in person or, if you are unable to be present, authorize someone (e.g., a Greek lawyer or accountant) to arrange this on your behalf. We recommend authorizing someone so you don’t have to go there yourself (saving time), as the process is conducted entirely in Greek and requires a Greek address (which is complicated if you are buying a property in Greece). You must then complete an application form (M1) and submit the following:

  • A valid passport
  • Proof of your address in the Netherlands (e.g. an energy bill)
  • Greek address (this can also be the address of your Greek lawyer/accountant if you do not yet have a home in Greece)
  • (if you authorize someone) A Power of Attorney (PoA) for the person who will arrange everything on your behalf

If you buy a home through Second Home Rhodes, we’ll naturally arrange the AFM number for you.
